Graduate degrees have not been required for many jobs in public history until recently, but that is not always the case today. These are some of the degrees that can help you with a public history career:
- A library science degree (MLIS or MLS)
- A master’s degree in a field of specialty, such as Art History or Medieval History
- A master’s in Museum Studies
- A master’s in GIS
- A master’s in Digital Humanities
- A master’s (or Ph.D.) in Public History
- A master’s in Historic Preservation
- A master’s in Cultural Resources Management
One of the best places to locate specific programs is the National Council on Public History’s very helpful, searchable “Guide to Public History Programs.”
