Professor Michael Bailey has published a new book, Magic: The Basics. Intended as an introduction to the topic of magic in history and the present day, the book presents magic as a global phenomenon. It explores historical, social, and cultural aspects of magic around the world from antiquity to the present day. According to the press website, key features include: attempts to define magic; examination of different forms of magical practice; debates about magic’s effectiveness, its reality, and its morality; and an exploration of magic’s association with certain social factors, such as gender, ethnicity and education.
