Dr. Matt Margis (Ph.D., 2016) was recently awarded the Karas Award for Outstanding Dissertation in the Humanities and Fine Arts at Iowa State University. His dissertation, "America’s Progressive Army," explores how Congressional leaders created a series of reforms that ushered in a new era of American military culture, one that formalized the incorporation of citizen-soldiers into national defense. As Iowa’s land-grant school, the scholarship produced at Iowa State is often related to the betterment of Iowa’s citizens, and for members of today’s National Guard an understanding of their historic roots will help them better prepare for the domestic and international challenges of the future.
Dr. Margis will formally receive his award at the Sigma Xi banquet on Thursday, April 27th
