Scholarships

Iowa State University offers a variety of scholarship opportunities through the Iowa State OneApp scholarship application form. The application period opens in the fall of each year. Deadlines vary depending on the opportunity, so students are encouraged to log in to OneApp early and often to ensure deadlines are met. After applying through OneApp, students will be considered for all scholarships for which they are eligible university-wide.

The Department of History also has a variety of scholarships available. Applications for these scholarships are also through OneApp.

Department undergraduate scholarships

Spedding Scholarships are awarded annually, on the basis of faculty nominations, to undergraduate students who have completed at least four semesters of full-time college coursework and have at least one year of study remaining at Iowa State University. Candidates must possess an “inquisitive mind and ‘spark’”: someone who has an intellectual curiosity and passion toward their field and has the ability to creatively communicate and effectively share their knowledge with others.

View past recipients

The Mark Finlay and Kelly Applegate Scholarship is available to undergraduate students with a history major in the Department of History, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Recipients shall have demonstrated financial need and a minimum cumulative high school grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale (incoming freshman) or a minimum cumulative college GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (transfer or current student). This award shall be made available to undergraduates, including first-year students.

Created by a generous anonymous donor, the Richard Lowitt Scholarship Fund offers undergraduate scholarships and supports conference attendance, historical museum visits, research travel, and other educational activities. Undergraduate history majors should contact the Director of Undergraduate Studies Stacy Cordery for application information.
