2023 history alum Ian Hunter is living his best life in Chicago, working in a field he’d never considered when he was an undergrad, but for which his history skills have suited him perfectly!
Hunter is a client service representative for Marsh McLennan, the world’s largest insurance brokerage firm. He works in surety, connecting lending agencies to companies who want to accomplish big projects. He loves it because he can see the tangible benefits of his work around him in his city, and he enjoys meeting people. Every day in his job, Hunter reads – a lot. He writes – a lot. He researches and analyzes. And he takes long-hand notes, just the way Academic Advisor Kevin Hill taught him.
“History gives you an interesting perspective on the world around you which is needed in every job,” Hunter said.
Hunter has observed first-hand that corporations like Marsh McLennan do not want to hire only business majors. His message to current undergrads is this:
“Don’t think you are less or know less than anyone else because of your history degree,” Hunter said. “Knowing how to read and write, and gather, weigh, and understand data are critical skills in the business world.”
